  • USG Boral SHEETROCK® All Purpose may be diluted to a workable viscosity by adding water followed by mechanical mixing if desired.
  • Can be applied by hand or mechanical tools.
  • When using USG Boral SHEETROCK® All Purpose for all three coats, the first coat must be used to bed a high-quality paper tape.
  • USG Boral SHEETROCK® All Purpose compound must be allowed to dry thoroughly (up to 24 hours depending on temperature & humidity) before re-coating or sanding.
  • Only apply over setting type compounds that have been allowed to dry thoroughly.
  • Sand with care using 180 or 220 grit paper.
  • Thoroughly clean all tools and equipment after use.
  • Apply over dry surfaces only and allow each coat to dry completely before applying another coat. Final coat should be applied to a smooth finish. Maintain maximum air, joint compound and surface temperature of 55°F (13°C) within working area until joints are completely dry.

Fill space between panels with compound (5” knife). Center and press in tape. Tightly embed with knife. Remove excess compound and apply it as a thin coat over tape. Apply compound to fasteners. When dry, apply second and third coat to joints (8” knife for joints, 5” for fasteners) smooth out 2” beyond first coat and let dry. Apply thin finish coat to joints (10” knife). When dry, use wet sponge to smooth it if needed.

To Finish Inside Corners

Apply compound to both sides (5” knife). Fold tape along center crease. Press into position. Embed tape with knife. Remove excess compound and apply a thin coat over the tape. Let dry and apply second coat on one side. Let dry and then cover other side. When dry, sponge smooth, if necessary.

To Finish Outside Corners

Fasten metal corner bead. Apply 3 coats of compound. Allow to dry between coats and smooth with wet sponge, if necessary. Extend first coat sponge, if necessary. Extend first coat 4-6” ono gypsum panel (8” knife.) feathering subsequent coats slightly beyond previous coat. Feather third coat beyond second (10” knife).

  • Avoid sanding if possible, if sanding is necessary, best result are achieved by sanding with a wet sponge to eliminate dust scuffing of lace paper.

  • After compound feels dry, wring out only enough water from sponge to eliminate dripping.

  • Rub joints gently using a sweeping motion to remove high spots with as few strokes as possible. Clean sponge frequently.

  • If dry sanding use 120 grill sandpaper. Avoid scuttling panel paper.

All surfaces (including joint compound) must be dry, dust free and not glossy. Apply SHEETROCK® first coat or SHEETROCK® Tuff-Hide Primer Surfacer with high solids content before painting or texturing. Strictly follow direction of painting and decorating material manufacturers. Contact them regarding decorating problems.

Use containers with same manufacturing date/code to minimize color variations between containers. Apply ample amounts of compound with paint brush. Texture surface immediately using paint roller, sponge, or other tools. Compound not intended as final surface, over paint when dry.
